LB Camden
Sustainability is a theme that runs through the London Borough of Camden's approach to everything it does, and it comes particularly handy in its approach to reuse, recycling and waste minimisation. The local authority is seeking to plug a gap in service provision related to the reuse of bulky items by supporting the development of a new reuse organisation. Meanwhile, it is introducing a pilot food waste collection service to kerbside properties in August. Officers are aware that many of the borough's residents will not be eligible to take part, and so it has set itself an aim of supporting community composting in all its forms so that communities are empowered to deal with their organic waste.
This is something that is of particular interest to Dave Wilson, Sustainability Officer at the London Borough of Camden. An expert across issues of waste minimisation, he has also taken a keen interest in home and community composting and his attendance at the CRN UK/LCRN conference was a key element of finding out more about the community resource sector across the country.
LCRN is currently working with LB Camden to deliver its community composting strategy. Part of this work has been helping to link up new LCRN members SEED Foundation with the local authority to help them deliver their estates-based food waste collection service. We've also been looking into ways to deliver medium-rise community composting that doesn't rely on useful but costly equipment and compliance with complex regulations (watch this space).
