SEED Foundation

The SEED (Social Environmental Enterprise + Design) Foundation aims to boost the success of other social and environmental enterprises through design. They work to convert designers from perpetuators of social and environmental problems, into key contributors to solving them. The Foundation believes sustainability should be as much about creating communities and jobs to enhance life as it is about environmental stewardship.

HiRise Gardens is a social enterprise being established by the SEED Foundation and Thames Reach that touches on issues of biodegradable waste, homelessness, locally grown food, community cohesion and biodiversity. It offers local authorities a turn-key system to deal with biodegradable waste, using the skills of a particular group of formerly homeless, unemployed housing estate residents. These people, currently under the care of Thames Reach, whose mission is to reintegrate the homeless into jobs and society, will manage on-site community composting systems that transform local food waste into compost and use this to develop further horticulture and landscaping skills. With the compost, staff will cultivate edible food plants that can be returned to the estate or sold to generate further revenue.
