LCRN Blog: The Food Cycle: things we didn't know
Yesterday The Resource Forum launched pan-London with an event centred around the Food Cycle: Production, Packaging, Preparation and Waste.
With our very own compost expert Edouard Guidon talking about Community Composting and LCRN members Mudchute Farm and Garden and London Food Link giving engaging talks about their work, this was a great opportunity to showcase the community sector's contribution to the issue.
But there was a lot more to learn! I'm a big fan of random facts and among the Things I Did Not Know before the event, which I can now relate for dinner party conversation, are:
- We currently use nearly 8 times more land to produce meat and dairy than grown crops
- Staple crops are more likely to grow better closer to the equator
- Some Marks & Spencer and Morrisons staff are unable to tell the difference between a cauliflower and broccoli
- and the rare trees at Avenue House in Finchley have thrived since being replanted in tree pits with London Waste's compost
I liked the last one because Avenue House used probationary service labour to do it, which reminded me of the film Greenfingers.
