Wormeries
Wormeries are ideal for people with very little outside space looking to compost just their kitchen waste. They are self contained units which operate odourlessly if maintained correctly. Wormeries have a much smaller capacity than traditional bins but can take a wider range of materials including cooked vegetable matter and bread.
The worms used in wormeries (Tiger Worms) are different to the average garden worms found in the garden and are capable of consuming half their own body weight each day. They are highly sensitive to acidic conditions so remember to avoid citrus and onions. Worms also require a lot of fibre in their diets. Around 25-30% of what goes into a wormery should be shredded cardboard, egg boxes or paper.
Wormeries produce both a rich, moist, soil improver and a liquid fertiliser (also known as worm juice). Wormeries are much faster at producing compost than traditional compost bins. Turnover is usually around 12 weeks. Wormeries can also go without attention for up to 3 weeks.
