What are the benefits of composting?

1. It reduces the size of your bin

Research into the composition of an average bin by the Waste and Resources Action Programme suggested that 17% was made up of kitchen waste while 20% was made up of green waste. This would suggest that you could lighten your bin by up to a third.

2. It diverts organic waste away from landfill

Sending waste to landfill, as archaic a method as it may be, is of even greater concern when related to the disposal of organic waste. Organic waste that breaks down in landfill does so in anaerobic conditions. It is a natural process, of course, but one that creates methane, a greenhouse gas that is 23 times more potent than carbon dioxide.
